Correct Cleansing

September 28, 2015

It may seem like one of the easiest steps in skincare, but many do it incorrect.

The first step to skin care starts with cleansing, and it's really an important one.

For starters, everyones skin is different, so the cleanser your sister or mother are using may not suit your skin type. Know your skin type before you buy a cleanser.

Cleanser does more than just remove makeup, it removes build up of bacteria, dust, pollution and all things we cant see. Whether you wear makeup or not, the skin needs to be cleansed twice a day.

Why must we cleanse twice a day?
Nothing works into the skin if it hasnt been cleaned. So if you apply moisturiser & serums on skin that hasnt been cleansed, chances are it hasnt reached low enough into the skin to do its job. It will just be sitting on the top, not able to go anywhere.

How we apply the cleanser deterimes how well our skin is cleaned.

There are a few types of cleansers;

Oils
Balms
Gel
Foam
Cream
Micellar Water
Make-up wipes

I don't have a micellar water or make-up wipes pictured here as I am not a huge fan. At all. And you shouldnt use them either.

Its best to apply a 2 euro size amount of foam and gel cleanser to the palm of your hand (for face, nck and chest) mix with a tiny bit of water to activate and massage into the skin for a few minutes. Avoiding the eye area. These cleansers are for more breakout and oily prone skin.

Remove with damp cotton, cloth or sponges.

Its best to apply the same amount of cream cleanser to the skin again avoiding eye area. Apply to skin and then add water and massage in for 2-3 mins. Cream base cleansers are for more dry, dehydrated, antiageing skin types. Sensitive skin would suit a cream cleanser aswel.

Oil cleansers are applied to dry skin and massaged in for a few minutes, and then water is applied to make it look milky. And remove.
This method is working on oil attrating oil and lifting the impurities from the skin. Its best to use this as your pre cleanse. Will suit oily, breakouts, dry and ageing skin.

Massaging the cleansers into the skin for a few minutes rather than just applying it and wiping it straight off, actually gives it time to activate and penetrate the skin. To do its job the right way.
We have 5 layers in the skin, we need to make sure we dont clog these layers by doing a poor cleanse. As this results in blackheads, and breakouts.

If wearing makeup and alot of product on the skin, serums, spf etc, its best to do a double cleanse. This would mean using either a cream, or oil first as your pre-cleanse to penetrate and remove the heavy particles on the skin. Followed by a gel or a foam (more benifical than the micellar water) to get the remainders off the skin.

Never apply regular cleanser to the eye area. This can be too heavy for the delicate skin and cause sensitivity and milia(white heads on the skin)

Always get a eye makeup remover for your eyes to gently removed the makeup, this protects and nourishes the finer skin in the area.

We wont discuss makeup wipes here. As they are a no no for everyday use. But they are good to keep by the bedside for the nights you cant be bothered to do your whole night time skincare routine. They are better to use than sleeping in your full face of heavy makeup.

Happy cleansing!

Katie
