Keratosis Pilaris

November 01, 2015

Rough, inflamed, red, pimples, dryness on the skin.

Now, don’t worry if you haven’t heard this name before. Not many know what it is. I have only become familiar with Keratosis Pilaris in the last few years, even tho I have had the skin condition as long as I can remember. I always thought it was just dry skin. People told me it was lack of vitamin K in my diet, eczema, or too much protein, and other queer things.

Most chemists I went to ask about it just said to exfoliate more and use Aveeno skincare. They hadn't heard of Keratosis Pilaris. Neither worked. I already do these two things everyday anyway, especially on the back of my arms- where I have the rough inflamed skin. The easiest way to explain what KP is, would be as an over production of cells on the outer layer of the skin.

It didn't bother me too much when I was younger and I didn't do too much about it either. I mentioned it to a few different doctors Id been to over the years, but again not much information was given to me about it.

However, over the last few months, I have really noticed the back of my arms getting rougher, and it was getting to the stage I didn't even want to wear sleeveless tops because there were so many red inflamed pimples and my skin felt like sandpaper.

I went to a doctor when I was home last month in Cork, who specialises in Woman’s Health and has actually just recently gotten more into advanced skincare, and has opened up an Aesthetics clinic, so I knew she would be able to help me out.

I was so right, the minute I mentioned the skin on my arms to her, she knew all about it and told me a particular brand to go and get, ‘NeoStrata’. An award winning skincare brand working with Alpha Hydroxy Acid products. (I will do a separate post in the coming week all about AHA’s and what they are because honestly they are so good for problematic and ageing skin).

I was so interested in this brand, which is made by two doctors who specialise in Dermatology. Their passion of skincare led them to the research that Alpha Hydroxy Acid’s are very effective in stimulating prematurely aged, damaged, or problematic skin to actually rejuvenate itself.

I was recommended to get this lotion from the Resurface/Normal Skin Range which has 15% AHA. (Active Exfoliant- glycolic acid) Which over time would start to break down the dead skin cells and dissolve it. Its designed for the face and body. NOT sensitive skin. (This lotion works really well on ingrown hairs and cracked heels).

I have been using it for 5 weeks now and it has healed up my skin so much. it feels so much softer. I do still have a few red spots of roughness, because I have naturally dry skin all over my body anyway. But the sandpaper feeling, and inflamed part has really gone down which is so good. It didn't change over night, I only started to see the improvements after about 4 weeks.

If you have a similar problem with your skin I would 100% recommend this product to try (but have patience). Do not use if you have sensitive skin. It is an active product. So test it on your skin first.

NeoStrata have a whole range of other products designed for normal, sensitive skin, and oily skin. Also for pigmentation, and nail conditions. I have yet to try more, but I can’t wait to after seeing the results with this lotion.

These are some pictures of Keratosis Pilaris on the Arms. Its also common on the face, buttocks, and thighs .

These two pictures are a good example of what Keratosis Pilaris looks like.

NeoStrata is a little more expensive than the likes of products in boots and the supermarkets, but that is all down to the ingredient list on all of their products. The ingredients are more active and result driven, which means they are more expensive to make. I paid around 30.99 for the lotion. So that is more than what you pay for your average body cream but, for problematic skin- it needs more TLC(Active Ingredients)

This brand is sold in most chemists in Ireland. I bought mine in Minihanes Chemist, across from the GPO in Cork. I was told this was the only chemist in Cork that stocked them. Here is the website  NeoStrata. Its definitely worth a look if your having issues at the moment with your skin. Or share this information with someone you know who is.

Hope you all have a great week :-)
