Skincare Resolutions to make this year

January 05, 2016

‘’It takes 21 days for something to become a habit’’

It’s a new year, meaning the perfect opportunity to give your skincare routine a much needed revamp. After the Christmas parties, New Year's Eve celebrations and many mince pies, January is the perfect time to start some new beauty rules that will last the year.

I've put together 16 skincare resolutions for you to make this year.

1. Ditch makeup wipes once and for all:
These wipes have been soaked in alcohol and they seriously do your skin no favours. Massaging and working a cleanser into your skin is 100 times better to do. You will see the difference in your complexion. Keep the wipes for emergencies like after a late night partying when you really have zero energy. But don’t become too friendly with them.

2. Use a serum:
Serums are like botox in a bottle. They have smaller molecules than other products so they penetrate deeper into the skin. Sending messages to the cells and giving them a wakeup call if they have been slacking, causing changes in the skin. By the age of 25 everyone should be using a serum (well if your skin savvy) to protect and support the skin resulting in less pre-mature ageing.

3. Do a mini facial x1-2 week:
Exfoliate x2 week to remove dead skin cell build up on the surface of the skin. This will leave your skin softer and brighter.
Use a mask x1 week. Clay for oily skins and Cream masks for drier/ageing skin types.

4. See a skin therapist:
Its good to go and have your skin analysed throughout the year. Let the professionals study your skin and make sure your using the right products on your skin.

5. Don’t sleep in your makeup:
Leaving make-up on overnight will clog the pores leading to breakouts and blackheads. Not what we’re looking for. Our skin regenerates as we sleep so what you do to your skin in the PM counts. Take off the slap!

6. Don’t squeeze your spots or blackheads:
Doing this will do you no favours, it will probably only make it worse.
Leave the breakout run its course, apply tea tree and clay to speed up the healing process but don’t touch it squeeze at it or pop it. There is a technique to doing this and if its done wrong scarring will occur and even worse, hyper pigmentation(dark brown spots/trauma to the skin) will show up.

7. Wear SPF everyday:
The skin is being attacked every single day whether your living in Ireland or Dubai. All weather conditions affect the skin even air con and central heating. Along with the environment, smoking and pollution.
SPF acts as a barrier on top of your skin allowing nothing to get into attack it or break down the cells. SPF15-30 should be worn everyday.

8. Wash your makeup brushes x1 week:
This will help remove any bacteria build up on the brushes and of course any old make-up residue. Make-up will go on much better once brushes are clean.
A lot of the time breakouts can be triggered because of un-clean brushes.

9. Change your pillow cases x1 week and invest in a silk pillow case:
Bacteria will build up on your pillow from sleeping so changing it atleast x1 week is very important. Silk pillow cases are a great investment if your someone who sleeps on your tummy and wake up with deep lines and creases on your face.

10. Book a mole check up x1 year:
Moles are always changing, its good to keep an eye on them.
Any ones that have changed in shape or have gotten darker are important to get checked.

11. Apply hand cream to your hands:
The hands are our tools. They allow us to carry out daily tasks.Using hand cream is the best way to restore and repair damaged hands. Keep a bottle of hand cream by your bedside and use it every night.

12. Get a Facial:
Some people associate facials as a luxury but in all honesty they are just like a workout for your face. Facials stimulate blood flow, increasing collagen and elastin production and hydration to the skin. They improve the whole complexion of your skin. Deep cleansing, removing congestion and working on concerns that you may not necessarily be able to work on at home (due to more professional and advanced ingredients in products). For people who don’t have enough time for their skin and a quick cleanse and moisturise is all they do, regular facials each month should be part of their routine. Facials are also very relaxing, so for those with stressful jobs or not enough time for themselves should really invest in them from time to time. You will feel and see the difference.

13. Get your beauty sleep:
Our skin and body regenerate as we sleep. Our skin is the first place that shows the signs of been tired. Puffy eyes and skin.
Make a commitment to turn off the lights, put away the phone and aim for at least 7-8 hours of shut eye. Its called beauty sleep for a reason.

14. Don’t neglect your neck:
The face starts from the neck upwards. So start to bring all your products down to the neck and across the chest. These are the areas that age first.

15. Make sure your using the right products for your skin:
Having your skin analysed by a professional and recommended products that will suit your skin type is crucial. Everyone’s skin is different, and ingredients are so much more important than a fancy brand.

16. Drink more water:
Last but not least, water…. We know we need it but yet so many of us don’t drink enough.
Majority of skin types are dehydrated, they lack hydration. The skin acts by how we treat it, we need to feed it with hydration inside and outside. Aim for 2 litres a day and grab a big water bottle so you can monitor how much you drink. Watch your skin change!

The skin is an organ, treat it well and invest in it.

I hope you get into a good skincare routine in 2016, and if you’re already in one please share it with us below!
