Vitamin C - Skincare Superstar

April 05, 2016

If you are skin savvy then you are probably already familiar with the ingredient Vitamin C in  products. But what you may not know is the different forms of vitamin C available. Which I will go into detail below.

Vitamin C is a superstar ingredient. It is an antioxidant so it has the ability to protect and repair cells from free radical damage. Read more about antioxidants and free radicals  Here.

Forms of Vitamin C in skincare products:

  • L-ascorbic acid(Ascorbic acid) has the most research of any form of vitamin C when it comes to benefits with the skin. This is the form of vitamin C used in advanced skincare products.
  • Other forms of effective vitamin C are Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Retinyl Ascorbate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate. The only difference with these ones compare to L-ascorbic acid is they have less proven research of benefits.

What Vitamin C can do for the skin:

  • Helps your skin to repair itself
  • Slows down free radical damage
  • Boosts healthy collagen production (yay plumper skin!)
  • Reduces inflammation & irritation (less redness)
  • Helps reduce brown spots and other forms of sun damage
  • Using vitamin C in your skincare regime aswel as spf can really help prevent UV penetration to the skin. (antioxidants and suncreams work well together)

Best way to get more vitamin C into your skin = PRODUCTS & DIET

  • Look for skincare products that contain vitamin C- Cleansers, day creams, Night creams, serums, masks. Look at the back of the product and try and invest in the L-ASCROBIC ACID/ASCROBIC ACID types of products (these are usually stocked in skincare professional salons and clinics) As this form is the type that has more known and studied research of being stable. Vitamin C oxidises when exposed to light and air so look for darker packing with a tube form or dropper dispenser so the product can stay stable, or else it doesn’t have an effect on your skin.
  • EAT more Red peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwis, broccoli, berries, tomatoes, lemons, oranges.

Here are some of the products I use which contain vitamin C.

What products do you use and do they contain vitamin C?

Next post will be all about vitamin A, another superstar ingredient in skincare.
