''On average it takes 66 days to form a habit''
It's been awhile since my last blog post, but I have lots of interesting posts to share with you over the coming weeks so I hope you learn something new from them. Please let me know in the comments below or on my social media pages if you do.
Prevention is better than cure when it comes to skin problems so be mindful of the following:
1. Not Changing pillow cases
x2-3 week is what we all should try and aim for.
We're sleeping on them for atleast 7-8 hours a night- thats the same amount of time your in your socks or knickers and you change them everyday so why not change the pillow cases. Bacteria, sweat and dust mites all can build up and linger on the pillow cases so this is a perfect recipe for breakouts which we don't want. Silk pillow cases are the the best to sleep on as they are much softer for our skin to lay on preventing sleep lines which can turn into deeper lines over a period of time.
2. Not Cleaning Makeup brushes
Clean them x1 week or more if you are prone to breakouts.
Bacteria will build up on the brushes and if you're not cleaning them regularly you are spreading the bacteria around your face.
Plus you get a much better makeup finish when applied with clean brushes.
3. Lying flat on one side of the pillow as you sleep
I know its kind of out of our control how we sleep... But trying to not lay on the side with your face flat into the pillow is much better for the skin.
The skin is being squashed and over a period of time this shows on the surface of the skin with lines and irritation.
Silk pillows are the best option if you lay on your side or flat on your stomach as you sleep. Im that kind of sleeper and I notice much less redness on my cheeks now that I use a silk pillow case. Your skin isnt being rubbed or scrached- it glides softly on the silk. Also amazing for taming frizzy hair!
Okay so once in a blue moon when you are totally bate or had a very late night wont be a major problem.
BUT, doing this on a regular basis is the worst thing you can do for your skin. Think of all the ingredients in the makeup you've put on your skin. Think off all the pollution, car fumes or smoke you were around that day/night- imagine sleeping with all that lingering in your pores. What's going to happen is clogged pores, and most likely some breakouts'or blackheads. Do not make this a habit! And if you sleep in it once off- just make sure you do a very good double cleanse the next day. A gentle exfoliation and a mask to detox the skin.
5. Not wearing suncream everyday
SPF isn't just for summer or just when the sun is out.
Its a daily defence for our skin, acting as a barrier or a sheild not allowing any harmful things attack our skin. The environment, the weather, car fumes, and smoke all attack our skin and break down healthy cells in our skin. This sensitises, irritates, weakens and makes our skin age alot quicker. Always wear it, rain sleet or snow. And look for one that says BROAD SPECTRUM which has UVA and UVB protection and that contains either titanium dioxide or zinc on the ingredient list.
Alot of my clients say they apply cleanser with a cotton pad and wipe or across their skin and thats their cleanse. If you do it this way then your skin hasn't being cleaned properly. Apply your cleanser to your skin leave it on for atleast 2-3 mins before washing off. This way the cleanser actually is removing any dirt bacteria and its prepped your skin for whatever products are going to go on your skin next such as serums and moisturiser.
7. Using Sunbeds regularly
Im guilty of using them in the past but Ill never set foot in one again, even if you paid me. Sunbeds have all different types of bulbs. The older the bulbs are the more damaging effect they have on your skin. As a customer using them you never know what bulbs they have. But never mind the bulbs- Sunbeds give uva uvb and uvc rays to the body. Uva stands for ageing, b burning and c cancer. Its frightening the damage that these can cause. They will age you're skin a hell of alot. You wont see it now, but in a few years you will. The UV rays can cause damage to the DNA in our cells causing skin cancer.
These both have a huge affect on the whole body. If you're regularly doing these your skin will suffer. You might not see it now, but as your body ages these will drag it down even more. With the skin being the largest organ, the effects mostly show here. Dehydrated, dull looking skin and of course your skin will look much older than what it is. If you smoke daily try to supplement vitamin C as this is depleted in the body from it.
9. Not enough sleep
Getting very little sleep a night takes a toll on the whole body.
Our skin regenerates and repairs itself as we sleep so if its not getting enough then it cant do its job properly. One example - is when excess fluid near the skin isnt being transported to the bladder to be excreted- the result is puffiness on the face.
If you are not sleeping well try find solutions to help you because everyone needs they're beauty sleep.
10.Picking or squeezing spots
It will lead to permanent scarring of the skin.
I have two scars on my forehead from picking at scabby spots when I was like 12. If you see a breakout come up, apply a clay mask to the area and sleep in it once or twice a week. Use products with salycilic acid to heal and clear the area or apply some tea tree oil. Avoid picking at all times unless you want to scar!
I hope you learnt something new reading this, if you did let me know! And if you have any questions fire away.
LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN!
Lots of love
