Breakouts: What causes them and how to treat them.

February 26, 2017

Getting breakouts regularly on the skin can be really annoying. Most of us experience a pimple from time to time while others suffer with them on a daily basis. Acne is the most common type of skin concern and not just in teens. Many adults are suffering with it too. See below how you can try and help your breakouts or figure out why you might be getting them.

How are breakouts formed?

Breakouts happen in the skin when the pores are clogged. The pores get filled up by too much dead skin cell build up and an over production of sebum (natural oil in the skin). Bacteria can get trapped in the pores and multiply, this causes redness and swelling- the start of a breakout.

What causes breakouts?

Stress - Too much stress in the body can result in an over release of hormones which causes havoc with our skin.
Hormones - The change in hormones before ones menstrual cylcle is the main cause of acne. Cystic acne that breaks out on the skin around the jaw and under the cheek bone area is often hormonal.
Genes - Genetics play a huge role in how our skin acts. If your mum or dad had acne chances are you will have your fair share too.
Bacteria -Pollution,dirt,car fumes, they all build up on our face and can clog the pores. Skin must be cleaned x2 day.
Inflammation - of the insides. Allergies and sensitivity to foods can cause a flare up in the stomach and the skin is also known as our second stomach. An Allergy test can help to see if you need to avoid certain foods.
Poor exfoliation - If you are not exfoliating the skin you are not removing dead skin build up on the surface. Exfoliation should be done x2 week.

What can help reduce breakouts?

STEAM x1 week to soften the skin and allow products to work deeper into the skin. Cleanse, steam then exfolaite. This is also great for removal of blackheads.
BHA/AHA cleansers - MUST be used if on going breakouts occur. Salycilc acid (BHA) face wash or glycolic acid (AHA) is very important to cleanse the skin with. Note: Cleanser must be left on the skin for atleast 1-2 minutes before washing off, otherwise the skin isnt clean.
CLAY face masks - Great to use x1 week all over the skin or just on breakout areas as a spot threatment. Clay absorbs excess oil and can improve the areas of breakout skin.
TEA TREE OIL - Natural remedy to apply to spots as many times as you want throughout the day, only works if the skin is clean. Helps to kill the bacteria.
DIET - Eat good fats, nuts, seeds and lots of greens. Limit sugar and carbs.
SWAP cotton pillow cases for silk pillow cases and change x1-2 week. Cotton is quite rough for the skin and not as much bacteria builds up on silk pillow cases.
DRINK - 2 litres of water daily.
LANCE- with a needle instead of picking your spots. Picking leads to scarring and hyper-pigmentation on the skin.

I hope this helped some of you. There are many skin treatments that can be done by professional skin therapists in clinics to help acne skin types. Find a salon near you and go for a consultation if you havent already. Remember, be kind to your skin. Most of the time these acne breakouts are a inflamation of the inside or hormones trying to indicate something to us. The skin will balance itself out with a little patience, good products, good diet and with the help of a professional doctor, herbalist or skin therapist.
