The 411 on Facials.

What is a Facial?

A facial is a skin treatment performed by a professional therapist who has an educational background on the science of the skin and how it works. A facial treatment deep cleanses the skin removing toxins caused by pollution, grease and dirt found in our everyday environment. Facials help to reduce the over production of oil in the skin. Oil is needed in our skin to moisturise and lubricate the skin, but an over production of oil can cause breakouts, blackheads and congestion. Facials tighten and firm the skin improving the texture and tone. They increase circulation in the skin resulting in a brighter and plumper complexion. Facials are a very relaxing and rejuvenating treatment.

A skin consultation should always be done before any facial treatment. This is where any allergies and skin concerns will be discussed.

There are many different facial treatments available today from hands on treatments to advanced machinery, peels and needling treatments. The results with all of these treatments are phenomenal. For those who have skin concerns such as pigmentation, sun damage, acne, scarring, and skin wrinkling -a series of a certain treatment (depending on skin concern) would be recommended for best results.

You don't have to have a skin concern to go for a facial.

Everyone can have facials whether your in your teens and you are experiencing breakouts or your in your early 20's and you have no concerns at all. Facials are like going to the gym and building muscle, the more you go for them the better your skin will look and feel. Don't wait til you have a skin concern to go for a facial. You are missing out!

How often should they be done?

This depends on your skin type and concern. If you have on going skin concerns such as acne or sun damaged skin, you would want to start a plan with your skin therapist to do a course of treatments every few weeks to see the best results. Our skin cells renew themselves every 28 days, but as we get older this cycle slows down. If a facial is done within this cycle for a reasonable amount of time the skin cells can be re-educated and the skin can be dramatically changed. Facials should be done every few months (depending on budget of course) and especially when the seasons change. Remember if you are going to invest in skin treatments, you must look after your skin at home too. Otherwise you are wasting your time. Its like going to the gym everyday and coming home eating domino's or MC Donald’s for dinner. Changes aint gonna happen!

I have talked about two of my favorite skin treatments here (skin needling) and here (environ vitamin boost)

When it comes to having healthy skin our diet plays a huge role. The skin is also known as our second stomach. Don’t forget to eat for your skin.

And don't forget to Cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin everyday, twice a day!
