7 Skin Care Sins:

August 08, 2017

1.       Sleeping in Make-up:

We can be forgiven for that one drunken night falling into bed with make-up on, but it cannot become a habit. Sleeping with it on will lead to clogged pores and spots.

2.       Eating too much sugar:

Sugar breaks down our collagen fibers in the skin due to glycation. Collagen is what holds our skin together and keeps it firm. When it is broken down fine lines and wrinkles occur. Sugar can also increase skin conditions like acne and rosacea.

3.       Not wearing SPF:

Daylight is present 365 days of the year, not just when you are on holidays. Sun protection factor should be worn everyday no matter the weather as a daily defence. The day light rays are what damage our skin over time, increasing melanin production (pigmentation) and breaking down healthy collagen and elastin fibers (wrinkles and sagging). Look for one that has both UVA and UVB protection.

4.       Using make-up wipes:

(Lazy beauty) Wipes do our skin zero favours. They do not cleanse the skin properly, they just smear dirt and bacteria across the face, its like applying a cleanser to your face and not washing it off, or skipping the rinse cycle of your washing.

5.       Picking spots:

No no no! This will eventually leave a mark on the skin and probably make the spot even bigger than it was. Any time you pick or pull at your face you are causing damage and irritation to the skin.

6.       Incorrect cleansing:

Cleansing is the most important step in skin-care and If it is not done correctly then none of the other products can work into the skin. You should cleanse in the morning, working the cleanser into your skin for atleast 1 minute. Then remove with damp cloth. You should double cleanse the evening to remove make-up and other creams and lotions. First cleanse can be a cream or oil base to get everything off. Then second cleanse should be an active cleanser with either aha, bha, or vitamin C depending on the skin type to really treat the skin- again working in the skin for atleast 1 minute.

7.       Using dirty make-up brushes:

Not cleaning brushes correctly and using them on the skin daily can cause bacteria spreading across the skin and can lead to breakouts and clogged skin. Make sure they are clean before you put them on the skin.
